Cane toads hop closer to Darwin
Tuesday, March 19, 2002 . Posted: 09:31:23 (AEDT)
The Frogwatch organisation says a cane toad has been discovered
at the Mary River Ranger station, indicating the pest is closer
to reaching Darwin.
The group's coordinator, Graeme Sawyer, says a report of the find
was received yesterday.
He says the discovery was not far from the Mary River, which is
a concern.
"We are a little bit fortunate in that respect that none of
the rivers point directly to Darwin," Mr Sawyer said.
"I guess they are going to come down the Mary River system
fairly quickly and once they are in that it's a fairly small migration
in the top end of the Mary to get into the Adelaide River catchment.
"Once they are in the catchment they will come down fairly
quickly into the Darwin area."
