A number of Territory groups including NT Frogwatch will join
forces with WA's Agriculture and Conservation departments, in a
bid to stop cane toads entering the state.
One cane toad has already been discovered at Kununnura but authorities
say it's a one off, and reports of cane toads 70 to 80 ks from the
border have been identified as the native Cyclorana Australis species,
which can be confused with the cane toad.
Noel Wilson is the Cane Toad project Manager in WA, and he says
both state's will work together to identify how widespread the pest
is starting with surveillance survey's in the Northern Territory
"At this stage we believe that the main frontline is at the
Victoria River area, however we have had reports of isolated populations
in front of that that we are still trying to determine".
Cane Toads have a large impact on biodiversity, and Mr. Wilson
says CALM and the Agriculture Department will be working with groups
like Parks and Wildlife at Timber Creek, the Department of Primary
Industries and the NT Frogwatch group to devise prevention and control
strategies.
