Cane toads on the march towards SA
Thursday, 26 May 2005. 08:17 (ACST)
Frog experts are warning cane toads are coming dangerously close
to South Australia.
Graeme Sawyer from the Northern Territory's Frogwatch says they
have entered the Murray Darling River system which means they could
spread downstream quickly.
He says the South Australian climate may prevent them from reaching
the plague proportions of northern Australia, but they are still
a concern.
"They're an adaptable and tough animal," he said.
"They're an incredible animal really, so just where they
end up and what they end up doing and some of those sorts of things
are a bit hard to determine, but certainly they don't like cold
climates and frosts and stuff like that.
"So that's certainly going to knock their population around
and I think the most interesting thing is, with people being smart
and working against them as well as those environmental conditions,
it may be possible to do a lot to control them."
