Cane Toad Community Awareness
and Fundraising Day

at the Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre,
Crn Flynn & Selby Streets, Wembley

The
WA Gould League will host this community event with the support
of the Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM),
WWF Australia, Kimberley Society, Western Australian Museum,
Alcoa Frogwatch, Conservation Council of Western Australia
and the WA Naturalists’ Club.
Entry is $5 adults and $2 children. All funds raised will
go towards supporting the construction of cane toad traps
in the Kimberley.
Kevin Kenneally AM, President of the WA Gould League will
welcome those attending on behalf of the community groups
involved and introduce the guest speakers.
Neville Collard (Nyungar Birdiyia) a descendant of the indigenous
custodians of the area will perform a traditional Nyungar
welcome and smoking ceremony.
Dr Paul Doughty, Senior Curator of Herpetology at the WA Museum
will present an illustrated talk on cane toads and their impact
on the State’s biodiversity should they become established
in the Kimberley. Native frog species that may be confused
with cane toads will be shown. Dr Mike Donaldson, President
of the Kimberley Society will talk on the importance of the
Kimberley as a
regional destination. A representative from CALM will outline
the departments program as the lead agency in cane toad control.
There will also be presentations, information packs and displays
from the other community groups present.
Gayne
Doyle from the West Australian Reptile Park will have an exhibit
of native venomous and non-venomous snakes.
There
will be a continuous sausage sizzle and a night spotlighting
adventure for native frog species at Herdsman Lake commencing
at 7pm.
