Broome Businesses Rally to Cane Toad Fight
The battle of cane toad versus Kimberley’s unique biodiversity
is now fully in the public arena with the recent launch of a national
advertising campaign. But a real fight could not be mounted without
the efforts and support of Kimberley locals, according to the Stop
The Toad Foundation.
“Right from the start, before we established this Foundation,
the tourism industry representatives and community members from
Broome to Kununurra were prepared to fight,” said Foundation
board member Russell Gueho.
“I am heartened at the continued support from Kimberley businesses
and people ready to assist with the fight against cane toads invading
Western Australia.”
Mr Gueho has been thrilled at the response of the ‘$1000
from 1000 Businesses’ initiative that was released late last
year. Cash donations are being contributed and the most recent donation
was $1000 worth of equipment from Kingswood Marine in Broome that
will go directly to those working on the frontline in Kununurra.
A GPS, EPIRB unit and safety equipment is essential in ensuring
that toad eradication exercises by volunteers are safe, and accurate
data on toad incursions can be recorded.
“The Foundation has been established to protect the whole
of Western Australia against this invasive pest and a major part
of our focus is to resource efforts at the frontline. Donations
such as this are invaluable to us,” said Mr Gueho.
Bruce Bechly from Kingswood Marine said that although the toad
frontline was 1000kms away from Broome it was an issue that will
impact all residents of WA should they cross the border.
“It is important that we all get together to support initiatives
to keep the toads out of Kununurra, Broome and the rest of the state.
I hope the donation of this equipment will help in some way.”
The ‘$1000 from a 1000 Businesses’ initiative is seeking
cash or in kind support from businesses statewide to help resource
the ongoing battle against these alien invaders. For more information
