Cane toad hitches to Kununurra
A CANE toad has been found in Kununurra - after hitching a ride
on a truck from the Northern Territory that was heading to Broome.
The
cane toad is a menace that is rapidly marching across the Top End
of Australia. It is reported to be within 200km of the WA border.
A massive effort is underway to prevent the poisonous menace from
reaching WA and establishing itself.
The Department of Environment and Conservation today warned travellers
heading north or returning from interstate to look out for cane
toads in their vehicles.
The truck, which arrived at the Toll West depot had been loaded
in Darwin with building materials including PVC pipes.
DEC Cane Toad project manager in Kununurra, Errol Kruger said the
healthy, almost fully grown male toad was believed to have travelled
in the PVC piping.
"DEC and quarantine officers inspected all material as it
was unloaded and no other toads were found,'' Mr Kruger said.
"The toad was euthanased by DEC officers and the relevant
authorities in Broome have been notified to re-check the truck when
it arrives there.''
Mr Kruger said cane toads were notorious hitch-hikers.
"Cane toads love to hide and shelter in containers, tents,
swags, and other camping items.
"With all the traffic and caravans passing through northern
Western Australia from the eastern states at this time of the year,
it's a timely reminder for people to check their vehicle and cargo,
especially equipment that gets left out on the ground.''
