“Stop the Toad” dance sees Kununurra Primary School
in Competition Grand Final
“Stop the Toad” a compelling tale of WA’s community
triumph over the cane toad, is a dance story that has St. Joseph’s
School primary school from Kununurra selected as a state finalist,
from a field of 45 entrants. They will now compete at the Perth
Concert Hall on 20th of September 2006 for the WA state title. If
they win they will go on then to compete for the National prize.
Fifty students from St. Joseph’s School Kununurra performed
their story dance in front of an audience of over 1500 at the Regal
Theatre in Subiaco on Thursday night August 3rd for the Wakakirri
National Story Festival. The Festival encourages young Australians
to be open minded, confident and active through the process of creating
and sharing stories.
The Kununurra children’s ages ranged from 6 to 13 years,
both Indigenous and white. ‘Stop the Toad’ is the brainchild
of Tanya Stafford and school Principal Carol Geurts and was choreographed
by Judy Hendrickse. It tells the story of the cane toad’s
imminent arrival in Kununurra, being defeated by the community.
The audience clapped in time and cheered throughout the performance,
with the judges awarding them 3 gold awards for; story, costumes,
sets and props and three silver awards for; story dance, music,
presentation and entertainment. The judges commented “Your
costumes and props were sensational as they helped set the scene.
We understand how big this problem is and thank you for bringing
about a deeper awareness. We are so glad to have you on board this
year. Congratulations St Josephs School.”
The Stop the Toad also won the 2006 ECO-ZONE award for most creative
use of aluminium cans and plastic bottles for 2 amazing Boab trees
made from recycled chicken wire, canvas and cans and bottles.
The travel to Perth was sponsored by many local businesses, whose
names were on the back of the children’s bright red shirts
which they wore everywhere whilst in Perth.
Stop the Toad Foundation bumper stickers were distributed.
The committed staff and community of St Joseph’s are now faced
with the task of raising money again to enable the students to return
to Perth for the state finals in September.
Donations and sponsorship are invited to now give the children
the opportunity to tell their story to the rest of Australia.
