MEDIA RELEASE

18 June 2009

Looking for a travel experience with a difference?

If you are ready for a travel experience with a slightly different flavor you might like to consider joining the annual Great Toad Muster being held around Kununurra from September 12 to October 12 this year.

The great news is that you don’t have to pay to join this unusual eco adventure. In fact, once you have got yourself there your food and accommodation bill is covered. Your only commitment is being prepared to venture out after dark to hunt for one of Australia’s vilest introduced pests, the Cane Toad.

Every year, WA’s Stop the Toad Foundation (STTF) holds the muster in an effort to keep the state free of toads. This year is considered a critical year in the fight as these toxic creatures are now near the WA/NT border, some 50kms from the scenic township of Kununurra.

“The Foundation relies heavily on volunteers from all over Australia and the world to come and help us collect and remove toads from the frontline, “says Kim Hands, STTF Campaign’s Manager. “It’s hard work, but a lot of fun and you get a great sense of achievement.”

“The sites where we work are extremely beautiful. It’s a great way to experience the northern landscape of Australia as well as protecting it from this ugly pest.

Now in its fourth year, the muster has attracted an eclectic mix of ‘eco warriors’ from around the world. Many return every year, almost addicted to the rewarding outcomes that joining in the hunt produces. Great friendships have been established, the hard work is relished and the stories that can be told about the after dark forays into the wilderness are a great addition to anyone’s travel blogs!

“There are no pre-requisites to becoming a muster volunteer,” says Ms Hands.
“Just a willingness to help and a love for the environment. Volunteers need to get themselves to Kununurra and STTF will do the rest. All food, transport, accommodation and training are provided by the Foundation.”

STTF need your support to make this year count and prevent the toads from potentially destroying one of the last great wilderness areas in Australia. If you would like to learn more about becoming a Muster volunteer, come along to an information evening on Monday 22nd June at 7pm at City West Lotteries House, West Perth, WA. Alternatively, contact STTF’s Campaign Manager Kim Hands on [email protected] or 0400130397.
