Toad Alert and Appeal

CANE TOAD ALERT!

Bufo Marinus, commonly known as the cane toad, is now less than 25 kilometres from the Western Australian border and our precious Kimberley region.

Called "extinction in motion", cane toads have the potential to devastate Western Australia's native wildlife and change forever the unique character of the Kimberley that we value so much. Unless we stop them, they will also become a poisonous pest throughout the South-West just as they have in Queensland, the Northern Territory and Northern New South Wales.

An aggressive predator, the cane toad competes with a multitude of small native species for a limited food supply. They also produce a highly toxic poison which makes them a deadly meal for native and domestic animals alike.

The Stop the Toad Foundation is a not-for-profit, non-government organisation working with community, corporate and government sectors to keep WA Cane Toad Free.

You can help the Stop the Toad Foundation in the fight to stop WA from becoming the next cane toad victim by making a tax-deductible donation today.

Your donation will help the Foundation to conduct the Great Toad Muster from 20 September - 18 October 2008.

Great Toad Musters were held in 2006 and 2007 at the end of the dry season when water is scarce and the cane toad is most vulnerable. Over 140 volunteers helped to slow the toad frontline by removing 60,000 adult toads, thousands of metamorphs and millions of eggs from the landscape.

As water becomes scarcer in the landscape toads can be found congregated around whatever water remains. This year the far northern region is experiencing the driest season in 25 years, making conditions intolerable for the cane toad, which must have water to survive.

Freshwater crocodiles and numerous snake species have little chance against the toad

The Stop the Toad Foundation needs your help to send out an army of volunteers to exploit the dry conditions, and newly developed fencing techniques to make the 2008 Great Toad Muster effective and to hold back the toad frontline from invading Western Australia. We already have over 50 volunteers committed to participating in the Muster this year.

Your donation will help to provide much needed food, remote camp equipment, fencing materials, petrol, first aid training and supplies, vehicle maintenance, satellite

communication and field radios. The Great Toad Muster is a major logistical exercise conducted under harsh conditions that relies on the generosity of donors and volunteers to stem the toad tide.

Please help the Stop the Toad Foundation to make the 2008 Great Toad Muster a success and don't wait until the toads are multiplying in your own backyard!

Thank you for helping the Stop the Toad Foundation protect Western Australia's unique biodiversity.

Yours sincerely
