That Toad!

Volunteers have long been the back bone in the fight to
prevent cane toads crossing over Western Australia's border. The
great toad muster ended on October 18, 80km from the Northern Territory/WA
border. As many as 69,123 cane toads were collected and destroyed
from an area known as the Whirlwind plains, where many toads feed
into WA.

Kim Hands, the strategic campaign manager for the Stop the Toad
Foundation, said: "Yes, the muster was a success. We hope we've
reduced the numbers of toads heading towards WA and the precious
Kimberley. We had over 70 volunteers from all over Australia and
the world came to help us at the muster, as well as a film crew
from Al Jazeera and a 'journo' from The Sydney Morning Herald. A
great turn out."
"It's really hard to say how long it is until cane toads enter
WA. The closest one that has been found to WA's border was about
20km away, but this was only one toad. The larger numbers and denser
populations tend to be further back than the 'frontline'.
