2010 National Cane Toad Eradication
Program
The first cane toad National Eradication Week was held in 2009 from 3rd October
until 11th October. Community groups from across the Top End of
Australia were involved in removing cane toads from their local
areas. 82 volunteers removed almost 10,000 toads from northern NSW,
QLD, NT and WA in just one week.
Some community groups commented that the time of year for NEW was
not ideal for their toad eradication. In view of different climatic
conditions, habits and movements of cane toads tied to weather and
rainfall, STTF will be conducting the 2010 National Eradication
Program over a greater extended period. At this stage it is envisaged
that our National Campaign for eradication of toads will begin around
March 2010 and continue for several months across tropical/temperate
regions of Northern Australia, thereby enabling many more regions
that are already active in conducting local toad eradication programs,
to be an integral part of our National initiative.
STTF has just received Federal Government funding for 2010’s
National Eradication Program under the “CARING FOR OUR COUNTRY”
initiative. This means that STTF will be able to make available
up to $100 for each group involved in toad busting during that period.
Funds will be available for such things as purchasing gloves, collection
bags, torches, batteries, gas for euthanasing toads etc.
Groups will need to fill in the Application
for funds form (45kb pdf) and supply proof of purchase for reimbursement
by submitting receipts for expenditure on items used for eradication.
